How about instead hardcoding a default module, i.e. /usr/lib/opensc-pkcs11.so and using that by default if it exists. So it is in many ways similar to the PKCS#11 issue - you need to specify from where to look a specific set of keys for a specific task. Do you compile opensc yourself? There are several, and which one you choose depends on a lot of factors.
